The Ultimate Guide to Doing a Facial Massage at Home Using Just Your Hands
Published
Facial massage with your hands is a simple yet effective way to rejuvenate your skin and relieve tension. It promotes blood circulation, reduces puffiness, and helps your skin absorb products better.
In this detailed guide, we'll show you exactly how to use your hands and fingers to perform a facial massage, step by step, with a focus on techniques that improve skin tone and alleviate stress.

Why Facial Massage with Hands?
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Cleanse Your Face
Step 2: Apply Oil

Step 3: Begin with the Neck
- Place both hands flat on your neck at the base.
- Using upward strokes, gently move your hands toward your chin, following the natural contours of your neck.
- Once you reach the chin, gently sweep your hands outward toward your jawline.
- Repeat this 5-6 times to promote blood flow and prepare your skin for the face massage.
Step 4: Jawline and Chin
- Place your thumbs just below your chin and use your fingers to hold the sides of your jaw.
- Begin applying gentle pressure with your thumbs, moving outward along the jawline towards your ears. This helps release any tension and gives the jaw area a slight lift.
- For added release, massage your chin in small circular motions using the pads of your fingers.
- Repeat for 2 minutes, making sure to maintain gentle but firm pressure.
Step 5: Cheeks and Cheekbones
- Start at the center of your face, near the nose.
- Use the pads of your fingers and gently press and sweep outward towards the ears, following the natural lines of your cheeks.
- Once your hands are near the cheekbones, apply a little more pressure and make small circular motions along the bone structure. This helps to lift and firm the area.
- Repeat for 1-2 minutes, ensuring that your fingers glide smoothly across your skin.
Step 6: Focus on the Eye Area (Including the Eyebrow and Orbital Bone)
- Under the Eyes:
- Use your ring fingers (the weakest fingers) to gently tap along the under-eye area, starting from the inner corner near the nose, and moving outward toward the temples.
- Tap lightly for 30 seconds to promote lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness.
- Around the Eyebrows:
- Place your fingers (index and middle) on your eyebrows.
- Apply light pressure and begin to sweep your fingers from the center of your brow out towards the temples.
- Use circular motions as you reach the temples to release tension around the forehead and brow area.
- If you feel any tension, hold the pressure on the area for a few seconds before moving on.
- Orbital Area:
- Use your ring fingers to gently massage the area around your eyes. Start from the inner corner near the bridge of the nose and work your way around the eye socket in a circular motion.
- This technique helps relax the muscles around the eyes, reducing strain and alleviating puffiness. Be careful not to press too hard on the eyelid.
Step 7: Forehead
- Place your fingers at the center of your forehead and gently apply upward pressure.
- Sweep your fingers out towards your temples, lifting the skin as you go. This helps to lift and smooth out the lines.
- After a few sweeps, use small, circular motions with your fingertips along the brow bone to release tension.
- Focus on the area between your eyebrows (the “11s” area) by pressing gently and massaging in small circles to alleviate tension.
Step 8: Temples and Sides of the Face
- Place your fingers on the sides of your head, near your temples.
- Apply gentle pressure and massage in small circular motions. This area holds a lot of tension, so take your time and enjoy the relaxing effects.
- Move your hands down to the sides of your face, gently massaging from your temples down towards your jawline.
Additional Tips for Maximising Your Facial Massage
- Gentle but Firm Pressure: Use enough pressure to stimulate your skin but avoid any harsh pulling. Always move upward to avoid dragging the skin down.
- Consistency: For optimal results, try to practice this facial massage 2-3 times a week as part of your skincare routine.
- Use Slow, Intentional Movements: Take your time and enjoy the process. The slower you go, the more you can focus on relaxing and letting go of any tension.
- Mind Your Breath: Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth to encourage relaxation during the massage.
