Using Coconut Oil for Baking
From chocolate cake to fluffy muffins and moreish cookies, the Lucy Bee house is always stocked with homemade treats and goodies. We love nothing more than indulging with a plate of homemade baked goods with an afternoon cup of our Lucy Bee Cacao.
However, wherever we can, we like to make our treats that little bit healthier – and our coconut oil just so happens to be the perfect substitute for processed fats and spreads.
You see, as well as being wonderful at nourishing the body from the outside and in, Lucy Bee Coconut Oil is the perfect addition to any bake. Dairy free, vegan and packed full of healthy fats, it’s suitable for pretty much every diet under the sun.
So, how do you go about using coconut oil in your favourite bakes? If you ever wondered how to get the perfect cake, then here’s our simple Lucy Bee guide on how to use coconut oil when baking.
How Much Do I Use?
When a recipe calls for butter or vegetable oil, how much coconut oil do you need to substitute for? Well, we’ve found that coconut oil goes much further than butter when you’re baking, so simply reduce fat content by about a quarter for the perfect texture. For example, if a recipe calls for 100g of butter or oil, swap it for 75g of coconut oil and you’re good to go!
Use Less Sugar
Amazingly, coconut oil’s natural sweetness means that you can use a whole lot less sugar, too. In fact, using Lucy Bee in your favourite muffin recipe means you can slash sugar by up to a third, making your bakes far healthier and friendlier to that waistline!
Add Salt if Needed
If your recipe called for salted butter, remember to add a sprinkling of salt with your coconut oil. We love using our Lucy Bee Himalayan Pink Salt for its body-loving benefits.
Melt the Coconut Oil For Cakes
If you’re baking cakes, cookies or mouth-watering brownies, we’ve found that melting coconut oil first makes it much easier to use. We like measuring out our Lucy Bee, then popping it into an ovenproof dish and placing in the oven as it heats up - you'll find the oil will melt very quickly!
Baking Crumbles, Breads and Pastries
Here, you want your coconut oil to be solid so that you can rub it together with the flour. Unless we’re going through a heatwave (wishful thinking!), that usually means keeping your Lucy Bee at room temperature.
