What happens to the skin during puberty and your teen years? Read our extract below:
“The first of these changes come in our teenage years, where puberty sometimes exacerbates pre-existing skin conditions. Hormonal fluctuations also cause visible changes to our skin.
Puberty occurs when the brain releases a hormone called gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), and when this hormone reaches the pituitary gland (found at the base of the brain), the pituitary gland releases two other hormones: luteinizing hormone (LH); and follicle-stimulating-hormone (FSH). These hormones stimulate the production of testosterone and oestrogen. Both males and females have these hormones in differing amounts."

Pollution additionally sees free radicals weaken the skin barrier and diminish the skin’s moisture retention. Smoking also accelerates the ageing process, where tobacco breaks down collagen and elastic fibres, which result in deeper wrinkles.
Although it isn’t possible to avoid or reverse the ageing of skin, there are some steps you can take to help with the appearance of the skin…”
