Lucy Bee Soaps: Ethical Best Buy and Free From Winners

Update

Read what the Free From Skincare Testers said about our GOLD winning Fragrance Free Soap:

“It lathered up so well, the best of any soap I’ve ever tried. It was more like a rich cream than a soap lather … Cleansed the body so well without feeling as if it was stripping skin’s oils … held its shape, did not crack … skin felt hydrated, nourished and clean – a nice bathing experience”

Gold for Free From Skincare Awards 2019 Hard Soaps

"Gentle coconut fragrance is lovely … lathered superbly and efficiently … hand-friendly shape … cleansed wonderfully, felt as if it was moisturising my skin … a good, generous, strongly performing soap … Imagine safe for virtually anyone to use (unless you have coconut allergy) … I cannot think of any way which this perfect product can be improved.”

“Lovely soap which lathered up very well and was very effective at cleansing hands and body … Surprisingly moisturising, skin didn’t feel tight … no cracking, no discolouration … great value for money and seems to last longer than many of the soaps I’ve tried”

About our Soap

Lucy Bee Soap is made using 100% Lucy Bee Fair Trade Extra Virgin Organic Raw Coconut Oil.

Our Coconut Oil is fully traceable, from one source only, where we know the suppliers and they know the farmers and workers who produce it.

Our Soap is produced in the UK, by a company originally set up to provide employment and opportunity in an otherwise deprived area.

How Soap is Made

Soap is used to clean the skin and is traditionally made by saponification, a chemical reaction between two natural ingredients: a fat and a strong alkali (such as sodium hydroxide).

This ancient and original way of producing soap is exactly how Lucy Bee Soap is made. We use sustainable, natural ingredients rather than petroleum and synthetic and artificial ingredients, which is the way many beauty and cleansing bars are created. Nor do we use palm oil, which is found in so many soaps.

Why Lucy Bee Soap?

We’ve kept our Soap as natural as it can be.

There’s hardly a day goes by without reading in the press about deforestation for palm oil production and the fact that the very existence of orangutans is threatened because of this.

We choose not to use palm oil in our Soap, even sustainable palm oil, due to its negative impact on the environment, habitat, animals and ecosystems. Instead, we use our own Coconut Oil.

Lucy Bee Coconut Oil is organic and the coconuts grow in agroforestry, a natural environment working in harmony with and supporting nature. Our Coconut Oil is also Fair Trade, with a guarantee that monkeys are not used to pick the coconuts.

Our Soap is not tested on animals.

Palm Oil

We do not use palm oil in any of our product range, including our soaps due to the negative impact it has on the environment, habitat, animals and eco-systems.

Many ingredients used in skincare and soaps include a derivative of palm oil, and it’s not always obvious that it’s been used. For example, some emulsifiers are sourced from either palm oil or coconut and the manufacturer of the emulsifier may not differentiate the source. We can confirm that no palm oil or derivatives of palm oil are used in any of our products.

COSMOS Organic

With the COSMOS Organic logo you can be sure that the product has not been tested on animals, it contains no GM ingredients, no controversial chemicals, no parabens, phthalates, synthetic colours, dyes or fragrances. You can be sure that the product has sustainably sourced organic ingredients, natural colours and fragrances from plants and flowers, it has a transparent manufacturing process, biodegradable ingredients, minimal packaging with maximum recycled content protecting wildlife and biodiversity.

Fair Trade

We pay a 10% premium for our products. This is used for sustainable community projects and fair wages. In addition, a further 0.75% of total sales is paid to the Fair Trade body to allow them to do their good work, such as auditing and compliance. In the words of Winfried Fuchshofen PhD, Director of the Fair Trade Sustainability Alliance (FairTSA), “By using products certified by us, we will all continue our path to supporting a fairer world for all, creating new possibilities and better living conditions for rural communities around the globe”

Vegan Society

The Vegan logo represents the international standard for authentic vegan products. A dedicated and experienced team check each individual product application against the criteria, and query any potential inclusion of animal ingredients.

Cruelty Free International

We are certified by Cruelty Free International who work to end animal experiments worldwide. It is a globally recognised guarantee that a brand has made a genuine commitment to ending animal testing for its products. Lucy Bee has met their rigorous criteria, including independent audits.

Environmentally Sound Packaging

Our aim is to use eco-friendly packaging and something that we have to consider is the durability of packaging and whether it is ‘fit for purpose’.

To protect the unique formulation of our soaps and to prolong the scent of the essential oils (where applicable), these need to be wrapped in a recyclable PP plastic sachet/flow wrap, which we then pack in an FSC recyclable, compostable and biodegradable card carton.

Soaps are normally made from palm oil and a soap made wholly from coconut oil, as ours is, is uncommon.

With its better foaming and lathering qualities than soaps made with palm oil, this unique formula means the soap can sweat, which presents something of a challenge to us in storing it, hence the use of flow wrap. Please be assured that the packaging weight is minimised,

We always aim to avoid plastic and to be as environmentally-friendly as we can - this is an area that we passionately care about and we are doing our very best. We have recently finished successful trials using a new biodegradable flow wrap, which we will use for future productions.

How to use Lucy Bee Fair Trade Organic Soap

Lucy Bee Soap lathers really easily when rubbed between wet hands and can be used daily. Massage over your body and rinse off.

Our Fragrance Free Soap is suitable for all skin types, leaving skin hydrated and clean. As with all soaps, avoid contact with eyes and if you should get some in your eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water.
