Coconut Oil: Five Of The Best Uses For Baby's Skin

Five Uses of Coconut Oil for Baby’s Delicate Skin

Totally natural

Free from harsh and toxic ingredients (and loaded with antibacterial and antiseptic properties), Lucy Bee Coconut Oil is 100% natural – and 100% brilliant. And, really, when our bodies absorb so much of what we apply to the skin, why would you use anything but the gentlest, kindest ingredients on your precious bundle?

So, new mums and pregnant ladies, put down those well-known alternatives and big-name brands. Instead, why not start using something every bit as soft and delicate as your baby’s skin?

How to use Lucy Bee Coconut Oil on your new baby

Here’s five simple and effective uses for coconut oil to care for your baby's skin:

1) Nappy Rash Cream

Although some babies suffer with these painful, inflamed rashes more than others, I guarantee that most will fall curse to nappy rash at some stage. However, rather than rushing out to buy pricey, over-the-counter ointments, it pays to raid your kitchen cupboards instead.

Free from chemicals and harsh ingredients, coconut oil is the perfect way to treat nappy rash naturally. Simply massage the oil across the affected area and it will act as a barrier cream to prevent any further problems. The antibacterial and antiseptic qualities of coconut oil also mean that it will work to nourish and care for the skin, as well as treating any irritation.

2) Baby Wash

Mums across the planet will understand when I say that babies create mess like nothing else. They are a whirlwind of chaos, dirt and brightly-coloured goo – especially when you start weaning!

Once bath time arrives, I’m always eager to wash away the day’s dirt and grime from my son’s skin (seriously, how do they manage to store entire meals in their neck folds?). However, instead of using expensive, shop-bought washes, I now use coconut oil to create an easy, yet effective, homemade baby wash. Simply combine coconut oil with a chemical-free soap, then lather up and wash off. Not only will it leave baby smelling great, but their skin will be even silkier smooth too!

3) Cradle Cap Treatment

Before becoming a mum, no one warned me that babies could suffer from dry, flaky skin on the head. Yet cradle cap is an all-too familiar problem with newborns and very little ones.

For a natural treatment, try gently massaging coconut oil onto your baby’s head and leaving for around 20 minutes. Simply rinse off and then use a baby brush to remove any loose flakes. The coconut oil moisturises and nourishes the dry skin, and effectively removes cradle cap flakes.

4) Body Lotion

Everyone loves the feel of a baby’s skin. Naturally soft, delicate and super smooth, it doesn’t usually need help in that department. However, babies can suffer from dry spots every bit as much as we adults do (I find the knees and elbows can sometimes go a little dry, particularly when they start to walk and tumble) – and coconut oil is a fantastic, natural moisturiser to use when they need just that little bit more.

5) Massage Oil

I am a huge believer in baby massage, particularly when it comes to colicky babies. Not only does the skin-to-skin contact help to develop a strong bond between parent and baby, but it also helps a child to unwind and relax before bed.

An alternative treatment using loving and soothing strokes on baby’s skin and across the body, it’s an amazing way to help your little one sleep and be calmed before bedtime(i).

However, I’d advise you to avoid shop-bought massage lotions (often loaded with petroleum) and, instead, use coconut oil, which is easily absorbed into the skin. If you want to experiment, you can even try adding drops of essential oils (just check they’re baby-friendly first!) to really help aid sleep and relaxation.
