Why Using SPF is Essential When Using Exfoliants

Whether you’re using a chemical exfoliant like our Exfoliating Tonic or enzymes found in our Pineapple Enzyme Face Mask it’s important to ensure that you are using an SPF in your skincare routine.

Why is SPF Important?

Exfoliating helps to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells and helps to increase cell renewal. However, this can leave your skin more vulnerable to the sun and UV damage.

Increased Sensitivity

When we exfoliate it removes the top layer of dead skin cells. This layer of dead skin cells acts as a barrier against UV ray damage and without this layer, our skin is more sensitive to these rays. This leads to an increases in the risk of sunburns and sun damage.

Higher Risk of Pigmentation

When exposed to UV rays your skin is more prone to developing dark spots or hyperpigmentation. If using exfoliators, it can make pigmentation more noticeable if SPF isn’t used to protect the skin.

Premature Skin Ageing

UV exposure is the leading cause of premature skin ageing, including fine lines and wrinkles. Exfoliated skin is more susceptible to the damaging effects of the sun.

Protection from Skin Damage

SPF helps to protect the skin from UV rays and the damage they cause to the skin, including DNA damage and increased risk of skin cancer over time. Freshly exfoliated skin is more prone to absorbing UV damage more easily.

Using an SPF can help protect your skin from these harmful effects, whilst also still getting the benefits of using exfoliants. It’s important to pick an SPF of at least 30 with UVA protection.
