So many of us use cotton pads during our skincare routine, from removing makeup, to applying a toner. Although 100% cotton pads do not contain plastic, they do usually come in plastic packaging, and are a single-use item.
With single-use cotton pads that aren’t 100% cotton, these can contain synthetic fibres which means that they will not fully biodegrade. Once used they are discarded and end up in landfill, which is why it’s important to look at switching to more sustainable options like reusable cotton pads which you can wash, and then reuse again.
Why are reusable cotton pads are better?
Did you know that if you use 2 cotton pads a day that’s 730 cotton pads used each year that end up in the bin.
With reusable cotton pads being, well, reusable it means that you’re avoiding adding to unnecessary waste to landfill. Instead with reusable pads each one can be used time and time again, helping to reduce daily wastage, helping to save the planet one cotton pad at a time.
Although reusable cotton pads may cost more on initial purchase, you don’t need to worry about running out, or purchasing more when you have used them. That’s the great thing about reusable ones, just pop them into the wash once used, after this they are ready to be used again!
The environmental impact of cotton
On average, cotton globally uses around 10,000 litres of water to create 1kg of cotton, with a single cotton t-shirt requiring around 2,700 litres to be made (WWF). Cotton is durable so ensuring that we are using it in a way so that it can be used and used again is important. By switching to reusable cotton pads we help to reduce water waste from single use cotton pads.
How we can all make a difference
We’re so excited to have added our super soft, reusable, bamboo cotton pads to our range! Made from 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. They even come with a handy cotton mesh bag to put them in which is washable too. Simply pop the reusable cotton pad in its cotton mesh bag and machine wash at 40C and allow to air dry.
Along with our muslin cloths, single-use cotton pads and face wipes are a thing of the past.
