When people switch from antiperspirants to natural deodorants you might have heard that people go through a ‘transition period’. First things first, deodorants and antiperspirants are two different things and carry out different roles.
The purpose of antiperspirants are to reduce sweating (and therefore odour) and use aluminium-based compounds to temporarily plug pores to create a barrier to stop you sweating through your ducts. Whereas deodorants allow your body to perform its natural sweating function, but the deodorant inhibits odour by preventing bacteria building up. Deodorants are made to cover any smell with a fragrance to keep you smelling fresh.
A transition period is basically a period of time where you may experience sweating more than you are used to. It’s important to remember that when you switch from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant, you are no longer using aluminium salts which block sweat ducts (and therefore stop you from sweating).
Just like when you start a new skincare routine, by changing your routine and what you are using on your armpits can mean that your body needs to adapt to the new ingredients in your deodorant.
Most people switch with no problems at all, although for some it may take up to two weeks to completely adjust. There is not a definite time frame for adjusting. We are all different, but it’s worth it in the long run!
Did you know that sweat doesn’t smell? It's when it comes into contact with the bacteria on our skin which is when the odour happens. Our deodorant contains micro silver which is a long term antibacterial and antimicrobial agent which neutralises bacteria, meaning that the smell can’t develop. We also use sodium bicarbonate which helps to protect and fight against odour too. We use coconut oil and shea butter, to nourish, soften and soothe delicate underarm skin. We are all different, and we all sweat different amounts, so it’s best to find out what works for you.
Use our Deodorant as normal. As odour is caused by the mixing of sweat with the bacteria on our skin, it's important to make sure that you have regular shows or baths, and using a natural soap is one way to keep your skin clean. After intense sweating or after exercising showering and washing away the sweat from your skin, means that the bacteria can’t mix with it to create an odour. After showering, you can apply your deodorant, just make sure that your armpits are dry. You can also reapply your deodorant and use it as needed throughout the day.
