Skincare Ingredients to Avoid During Pregnancy

Pregnancy comes along with a lot of ‘can I eat this? Can I use that? Is what I am doing ok?’ Being within the skincare sector we wanted to share an easy list on ingredients which are known to be avoided in skincare, we hope this is helpful and not stressful. 
 
With this list we've highlighted ingredients which are advised not to use and we recommend researching the reasons why for yourself. There are most likely other ingredients we have missed, but these would be ones which are most known and you’ll more likely come across. 
Skincare for Pregnancy

Retin-A, Retinol, and Retinyl Palmitate - These vitamin A derivatives can negatively affect the development of your baby. 


Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid - Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are ingredients that are recommended to avoid in pregnancy. Many of the commonly used acne creams contain combinations of these acids to manage acne. These ingredients are known in high doseage to cause birth defects and pregnancy complications. 


Formaldehyde - A chemical which has been associated with cancer, miscarriages, and reproductive issues. Usually in hair products, or nail vanish.  

Skincare to avoid pregnancy


Hydroquinone - During pregnancy, women can suffer from a skin hyperpigmentation condition called melasma -  “mask of pregnancy”. In most cases, this condition resolves by itself at the end of pregnancy. You can get over-the-counter topical medications, many of which include hydroquinone. It has a high absorption rate so it is advised best to avoid.  


Aluminum Chloride Hexahydrate - Aluminium chloride, the main component in antiperspirants and it is a chemical. It is recommended to avoid especially in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Treatments such as botox, fillers, microcurrents, laser are also a no-go when pregnant.
