What is the difference between chemical and mineral SPFs?

When looking at SPFs you may have heard of them being referred to as mineral or chemical, this blog covers what the difference is between the two, and which may suit your skin.

Regardless of whether they are mineral or chemical, SPFs help to protect your skin from burning, reduce your risk of skin cancer, and prevent skin ageing, including fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, and hyperpigmentation.

Mineral Sunscreens

Mineral sunscreens are also known as inorganic or physical sunscreens. These usually contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

Mineral sunscreens are usually quite thick, and usually leave a white cast on the skin. Due to the thickness of most mineral sunscreens, they may not be the best choice for those with acne-prone skin.

Mineral sunscreens work as soon as they apply, which means you can go outside straight after application. vegan sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens (or organic) work by filtering and absorbing UV rays, turning them into heat. By absorbing the rays, it helps to protect your skin from damage.

Chemical sunscreens are less likely to feel heavy or leave a white cast on the skin, they’re lightweight and sink into the skin, which means that they can be ideal for everyday wear.

With chemical sunscreens you need to allow 15-30 minutes for it to be absorbed before your skin is protected.

So, what should you go for?

It depends on what you want from your SPF and whether it suits your skin. No matter which one you pick, always aim for one which is broad spectrum offering both UVA and UVB protection and offers a SPF30 or higher protection.
