The secret to better skin is to stick to a consistent, effective skincare routine. Although it is impossible to cure acne, you can keep spots under control by using the right products. Consistent skincare and patience are vital.

]]>Some people find their skin looks healthier, fuller and brighter (pregnancy glow) while others may find their skin is more sensitive – and can experience such things as dryness, redness, more prone to acne on the face, neck and back even it’s never been an issue previously. Another skin condition that can occur during pregnancy is pigmentation - darker areas on the skin due to hyperpigmentation. The reason for the change in the skin’s complexion is down to hormonal changes and extra blood flow.
With the body, some people can find they feel more swollen, this is due to the body retaining more fluid. This can affect the face, hands, ankles and feet. The skin can feel itchy as your skin stretches – this usually happens over the stomach and breasts. Stretch marks are common and some people get something called a linea nigra which is a dark line on the lower abdomen.
A breakdown of each skin concern;
Stretch Marks
Red, pink or purple lines that appear mostly on the stomach, breasts and hips.
Linea Nigra
A darkened vertical line which is in the middle of the belly. It can look different on everyone, and it fades after the baby is born.
Melasma
Dark patches on the face can appear. This is usually common on the forehead and cheeks which is due to an increase of pigmentation, and this is due to the increase of hormones.
Acne
Extra hormones can change the skin and cause acne on the face, neck and body. This is down to the extra hormones in your body producing more oil which can cause breakouts, it can also be down to the sensitivity caused by the hormonal changes.
Eczema
A common skin condition which is also known as atopic dermatitis can develop in pregnancy, this causes dry, scaly, itchy, red skin.
Rosacea
A common skin condition that can get worse during pregnancy. Rosacea can cause facial flushing, particularly across the cheeks, nose and chin.

]]>Stretch marks are completely normal with the body changing and stretching.
You can help improve the appearance of stretch marks is to stay hydrated, exercise and gently massage the areas of concern. These things will not stop stretch marks but may help with preventing them or not making them as prominent. We recommend our Coconut Oil or Brilliant Balm for massage which are both safe to use in pregnancy.
Pigmentation / Melasma
Pigmentation should fade after pregnancy. Something to note is that it is important to wear SPF daily and on sunnier days wear a cap for extra protection. This can help avoid or reduce the appearance of pigmentation. You can also use liquid exfoliants which can help with fading pigmentation and the overall complexion. It is important to look for brands which are safe to use in pregnancy, like the Lucy Bee range which includes an SPF and a liquid exfoliant.
Acne and Breakouts
Acne is a very complex topic and if you are suffering from acne we always recommend talking to a dermatologist or doctor about it to get the right treatment for you if you are struggling with it.
It is important to cleanse and clean your face morning and night, clean pillowcases regularly, and to try not to touch your skin or squeeze spots as this can cause extra bacteria. Use natural, effective products, use hydrating, nourishing products which support the skin barrier and don’t be scared of using products that contain oil as the skin barrier needs this. We recommend the Reviving Cleansing Cream, AHA & PHA Tonic, Radiance-Boosting Face Cream, Hydrating Face Wash and SPF 30.
Dry and Itchy Skin
This is due to hormones and skin stretching. Keeping the area nourished and hydrated will help combat itchiness. We recommend our Coconut Oil or Brilliant Balm for this as both will deeply hydrate, nourish and lock in moisture.
Eczema
We always recommend talking to a dermatologist or doctor about it to get the right treatment for you if you are struggling with it. We also recommend using fragrance-free, natural, organic products which are hydrating, soothing and nourishing on the skin. From the Lucy Bee range the majority are dermatologically approved for sensitive skin and fragrance free, we’d recommend our Reviving Cleansing Cream, Radiance-Boosting Face Cream, Brilliant Balm and Vitamin A (alternative) Eye serum to help with eczema.

What are AHAs?
Alpha-hydroxy acids, aka AHAs are chemical exfoliants. Their main job is to dissolve the bonds binding dead skin cells to the skin’s surface to reveal new, radiant skin, to give a smoother, brighter complexion alongside a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. AHAs improve moisturisation and increase the production of collagen which helps with skin elasticity.
What are the key ingredients in this product?
When should I use this in my skincare routine?
Our Exfoliating Tonic with AHA & PHA can be used after cleansing and before moisturising. Due to the inclusion of AHAs, we recommend always including SPF in your skincare routine when using this product.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, we’ve had this product tested by an independent testing house and they have confirmed that it is suitable for sensitive skin.
Everyone’s skin is different however, so we recommend doing a small patch test before using this to check that it suits your skin.
Is this suitable for use in pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Yes, this product has been independently tested by a cosmetic safety assessor and approved safe to use in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Is this suitable for teens?
For teens with problematic skin, you can use this product on the area of concern - dampen the cotton pad with water, apply the tonic, then use on the area once a day in the evening. When using any new product, we recommend doing a patch test first. See here for how to patch test. Please note that we do not recommend our Exfoliating Tonic with AHA & PHA for children.
When should I do a patch test?
When using any new product we recommend doing a patch test first. See here for how to patch test.
Is this suitable if I have rosacea?
Exfoliating Tonic with AHA & PHA has been dermatologically approved for sensitive skin.
Lucy suffers from mild rosacea on her cheeks and one of the other team members suffers more seriously with it and they have found that this tonic has really suited their skin and helped to calm and soothe it. It has also helped to keep the skin hydrated and it doesn’t trigger them to flare up or cause any irritation.
The range will help with hydration but of course everyone’s skin is different and if you have any concerns, we recommend doing a patch test first.
Who can use PHAs?
They generally work for all skin types, especially those with more sensitive skin.

Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) are often called next generation of AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids). Like AHAs they are chemical exfoliants, and work to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells.
PHAs are larger molecules than other acid exfoliants (e.g. AHAs like lactic acid and glycolic acid (which has the smallest molecule size)), this means that they do not penetrate as deeply into the skin and work to exfoliate the surface of the skin. They are more gentle than other acids and are less likely to be irritating to the skin.
They also attract water (humectant) which helps to hydrate the skin, so the formulation is not drying to the skin whilst the acids work to remove dead skin cells.
PHAs work to improve skin tone and texture by removing the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin leaving your skin smoother and brighter. They also increase cell renewal.
Gluconolactone, galactose and lactobionic acid.
They generally work for all skin types, especially those with more sensitive skin.
Our AHA & PHA Exfoliating Tonic contains gluconolactone.
It’s a great ingredient for those with sensitive skin as they are less irritating.
We’ve still included AHAs which work deeper into the skin, but the inclusion of this PHA means that the tonic also focuses on the out layer of the skin, as well as providing moisture, leaving your skin glowing and hydrated.
AHAs increase cell renewal and exfoliate away dead skin cells, leaving the skin looking and feeling smoother and improves the complexion.
Lactic Acid helps to increase cell turnover and reveal smooth, bright skin.
Hyaluronic Acid helps to keep the skin hydrated by supporting epidermal skin hydration.
Aloe Vera is an emollient which is skin soothing and conditioning.
Sodium lactate attracts and binds to water and helps to provide hydration to the skin, reducing water loss from the skin.

Key benefits: exfoliates, brightens, hydrates, and moisturises for clearer and smoother skin.
What are PHAs?
Polyhydroxy acids, aka PHAs, are chemical exfoliants, similar to AHAs (they're considered their next generation cousins). They work by exfoliating dead skin cells on the surface, evening skin tone and texture, while providing moisture to the skin.
Due to most of our customer base predominantly having sensitive skin we wanted to create a tonic which includes this special acid which is known for being gentler on the skin.

Why did you create this product, you already have the Brilliant Balm and Reviving Cleansing Cream?
From Lucy: The aim with this product was to formulate something which was suitable for all skin types and quick and easy to use in everyday life without compromising on how the skin felt while using and afterwards – we wanted this to be effective, kind and your everyday must-have. Something I always swear by is cleansing daily, I really do think this is one of the key things you can do in making your skin look more youthful.

Our Reviving Cleansing Cream is a rinse-off cleanser that cannot be left on the skin. It can be used both morning and night. It is a cream and oil-based cleanser which is lighter in weight than the balm.
It contains anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce redness, blemishes and problematic skin. It is anti-ageing and repairs and hydrates skin.
You need to apply this to damp hands and skin and then use with a wet Lucy Bee muslin cloth or cotton pads to wipe away the cleansing cream and impurities it has lifted.
Our Brilliant Balm is multipurpose. It can be used as a leave-on product to moisturise dry skin (overnight mask/balm and on dry areas), as well as a deeply nourishing and rich cleansing balm that can be used morning and night (morning – great way of boosting your skin’s hydration and getting the oxygen and blood pumping. Evening – makeup remover and more of a luxury, relaxing evening balm).
You need to apply it to dry hands, warm the product up and then apply to dry skin. Massage into the skin and then wipe off with a wet Lucy Bee muslin cloth/cotton pad.
It helps improve firmness, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and is intensely nourishing, soothing and skin-protecting. It is great for sensitive skin, dry skin and as an anti-ageing product as it really locks in the moisture.
Our Hydrating Foam Face Wash, is a foam face wash which is rinsed off the skin and doesn’t require a muslin cloth. It has the consistency of silky mousse, and although a foam this product doesn’t strip the skin or leave you feeling dry. Shake well before use. ]]>Lucy Bee is a family run business that keeps sustainability at the forefront of all the decisions we make, from the packaging we use for products and shipping, to the companies that we work with. Sustainability mainly focuses around the environment and social responsibility for businesses, whilst still running profitably and ethically.
You can see more about our story here.
We insist on using recyclable packaging. We make every effort to minimise our packaging and to use only the most sustainable materials available to us, like our use of aluminium packaging due to its recyclable nature. We realise that we’re not perfect, but we do our very best to be as eco-friendly as we can. You can read more about the packaging we use here.
Although we try to not use plastic, in certain cases we have to due to the nature of the product but we ensure that we still use post-consumer-recycled plastic.
Palm oil is used widely in cosmetics products (along with food, cleaning products, detergents etc), however we have made the decision to completely avoid using palm oil and any of its derivatives due to the controversial aspects of the ingredient, which include:
You can read more about the impact of palm oil here.
In some regions of the world, pig-tailed macaques are intentionally bred and trained – often with punishment – to harvest coconuts. However, our supplier in the Philippines does not use this method. You can read more about the unethical practice of using monkeys here.
we source our coconuts for out coconut oil from the Philippines where we ensure that we pay our fair share to the community by using FairTSA to certify that acceptable community projects, wages and living conditions are aided by the premium we pay towards being Fair Trade. You can read more about FairTSA and Lucy Bee here or check out their website to learn more.
As stated above Lucy Bee works with organisations to ensure our products are sustainable and achieve a high level for effectiveness whilst still remaining as ethical as possible. We also work with:
Soil Association (COSMOS Organic & COSMOS Natural): By being certified through Soil Association, our customers can be sure that they are purchasing something made from sustainably-sourced, organic ingredients and allows transparency through our process.
The Vegan Society: At Lucy Bee we don’t feel it’s necessary to use animal produce when there are so many more alternatives out there.
Cruelty Free International (Leaping Bunny): There is absolutely no need to test products on animals and so this is something that we feel strongly about at Lucy Bee and something that we want to help make a stand against.
Ethical Consumer Guide: Lucy Bee are proud to be an Ethical Consumer number 1 best buy for multiple products, which monitors things such as animal testing, human rights and sustainability.
If you want to rad more about these certifications and why they are important to us you can read this page.
Lucy Bee has worked with a host of charities over the years of being in business, some of which include:
The Soup Kitchen, London: The Soup Kitchen feeds, clothes and provides mental health support to over 100 homeless and vulnerable people in London each day and none of that is possible without countless volunteers and donors.
Love, Support Unite Africa Little Blossoms Programme: Little Blossoms aim is to sustain the projects that have already been started and to help with future plans, which include another shelter for children at the existing foster home that has been established.
Soap Donations during COVID: During COVID we supplied 55 different charities with 30,000 bars of soap.

On average, cotton globally uses around 10,000 litres of water to create 1kg of cotton, with a single cotton t-shirt requiring around 2,700 litres to be made (WWF). By switching to reusable cotton pads we help to reduce water waste from single use cotton pads, and is why we launched our super soft, reusable, bamboo cotton pads to our range! You can also check out our other reusable products here, and if you want to read more about switching from single use accessories you can read more on the blog here.
We're also big fans of the different applications of our products, for example you can use coconut oil for your hair, coconut oil pulling for your teeth and coconut oil for stretch marks (not even including cooking)!

How to use
Remove a pea-sized amount of deodorant from the jar. Soften the deodorant between fingers and rub gently into the armpit area, onto clean and dry skin.
No Palm Oil
Many soaps list palm oil in their ingredients but we choose not to use it in ours, even sustainable palm oil, due to its negative impact on the environment, habitat, animals and eco-systems.
There’s hardly a day goes by without reading in the press about deforestation for palm oil production and the fact that the very existence of orangutans is threatened because of this.
Many ingredients used in skincare include a derivative of palm oil, and it’s not always obvious that it’s been used. For example, some emulsifiers are sourced from either palm oil or coconut and the manufacturer of the emulsifier may not differentiate the source. We can confirm that no palm oil or derivatives of palm oil are used in any of our products.
How Soap is Made
The traditional way of making soap is by saponification – a chemical reaction between two natural ingredients: a fat (coconut oil) and a strong alkali (such as sodium hydroxide).
This ancient and original way of producing soap is exactly how Lucy Bee Soap is made. We use sustainable, natural ingredients rather than petroleum and synthetic and artificial ingredients, which is the way many beauty and cleansing bars are created.
The process involved in making our Soap is as follows:
Lucy Bee Soap is Free From:
Packaging
To protect the unique formulation of this soap it needs to be wrapped in a recyclable PP plastic sachet/flow wrap.
Soaps are normally made from palm oil and a soap made wholly from coconut oil, as ours is, is uncommon.
With its better foaming and lathering qualities than soaps made with palm oil, this unique formula means the soap can sweat, which presents something of a challenge to us in storing it, hence the use of flow wrap. Please be assured that the packaging weight is minimised,
We always aim to avoid plastic and to be as environmentally-friendly as we can - this is an area that we passionately care about and, as a small business, we are doing our very best. We are working on trials using a new biodegradable flow wrap, which we hope to use for future productions.
FAQs
Our Soap manufacturer confirms, “The coconut oil in the soaps will not clog drains as it is carried away by the soap suds in rinsing.”
Our range of soaps are nut and peanut free in their ingredients. However, they are produced in an environment which uses nut oils (such as almond oil and argan oil, for example) for other brands’ soaps and whilst the production line is cleaned thoroughly before our Soaps are made, this production line is not cleaned to food grade standard.
We would always advise to err on the side of caution and if in doubt, do a small patch test on skin before using our Soaps.
No, it isn’t. The glycerin in the Lucy Bee Soap isn’t actually added, it is created by the reaction of the base chemical on coconut oil.
Saponification is the process where a fat is treated with an alkali which is the traditional way to produce soap. Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides, such as lauric acid, capric acid, caprylic acid and myristic acid, and these are converted to glycerin.
Rest assured, there is no palm oil in our Soap, and we would never use it in any Lucy Bee product.
When using any new product we recommend doing a patch test first. See here for how to patch test.
We don’t recommend using our Soap on your face. The purpose of soap is to remove dirt, grime and oil from the skin. Though our Soaps are natural, if you were to use these on your face, over time it could be harsh on the face. The skin here is thinner than the rest of your body and can become sensitive.
We have a skincare range out which is dermatologically approved, and this is our recommended option for use on your face.

Did you know that products may claim to be ‘cruelty free’ or ‘not tested on animals’ but their claims may only refer to the finished product. A lot of animal testing occurs at the ingredient level.
Cruelty Free International works to end animal experiments worldwide.
It’s the best assurance that a company has made a genuine commitment to ending animal testing. Cruelty Free confirm that, “Our brands must meet our rigorous criteria which apply globally and extend over and above laws governing animal testing and include ongoing independent audits. Only then can they display the Leaping Bunny logo.”
The Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny is the globally-recognisable gold standard for cosmetics, personal care and household products. It is the only international logo that requires:
What does ‘Fixed cut-off date’ mean?
This means the date after which the company (Lucy Bee) must not accept animal testing of any of its raw materials or ingredients. Lucy Bee has a fixed cut-off date of 11 March 2013.
There is absolutely no need to test products on animals and so this is something that we feel strongly about at Lucy Bee and something that we want to help make a stand against.

In the skincare world this is a huge achievement as palm oil and especially its derivatives are found in so many ingredients used in skincare, and it’s not always obvious that is has been used. For example, some emulsifiers are sourced from either palm oil or coconut and the manufacturer of the emulsifier may not differentiate the source. We can confirm that no derivatives of palm oil are used in any of our products.
We have a blog here, which goes into more detail about palm oil and its environmental impact, as well as another infographic blog here.
In short, due to an increase in demand for palm oil this has led to mass plantation of palm trees that product palm oil. For space to be made for these plantations, native forests and rainforests to these areas are destroyed, which in turn destroys the natural habitat in which wildlife & plants thrive. The unsustainable way in which forests are being cleared is damaging to the environment, wildlife and to the local communities in these areas.
We have worked so hard with our manufacturers to create products that are results-driven but are also kind to the planet.
It may take us a little longer to source ingredients, but we stand by our mission to be 100% palm oil free.

More about Love, Support Unite
Love, Support Unite Africa (LSU) is a volunteer foundation based in the UK .It was set up to help sustain Tilinanu Orphanage in Malawi, which houses and educates girls on a full-time basis, as well as feeding orphans in the community daily. They now help to empower people to become self-sufficient, with a leg-up rather than a hand-out. Community-based projects that integrate education, enterprise, nutrition and health, lift communities out of the cycle of poverty into a cycle of sustainability.
We’ve had a long-term relationship with Love, Support Unite which started in 2014! During this time we have been involved in various ways: we’ve donated some of our coconut oil for baby massage and it has also helped to prevent and treat ringworm in children, which causes infection and scarring; we’ve sponsored 5 children in the orphanage; we, along with several of our partners, have donated funds to build homes for teachers; and we’ve ran half marathons and scaled the Three Peaks to fundraise for a further home to be built.
In 2019 we also donated our soaps to help support the girls in the Tilinanu Orphanage, which you can read about here.
You can read more about LSU here.

In regard to the recent Daily Mail article, we've been asked if our SPF offers the correct UVB protection stated.
Yes it Does.
Our SPF 30 Face Serum has had the follow tests carried out and has achieved the SPF value of 30.
The ISO 24444:2019 in vivo evaluation of the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) which shows our sunscreen is an SPF 30.
UVA Protection Factor was carried out through the ISO 24443:2012 in vitro test. To meet the UVA protection labelling requirements of ISO 24443:2012 the UVA-PF value must be at least ⅓ of the SPF value determined by the ISO 24444:2019 protocol. Ours achieved this and can carry the UVA Logo.
